A client’s idea, shaped around a longer journey
Our clients chose Weekday Privilege with authorisation to drive in Italy and extra mileage. Their journey took them through Davos and Val Müstair, with a night in Merano before Maranello for the Ferrari factory tour and museum. On the return they stopped in the Lake Como area and chose the San Bernardino Pass to avoid traffic on the Gotthard route. The result was a Ferrari holiday with a very different landscape on each leg.
A suggested four-day itinerary, with three nights in Italy
This is a planning example inspired by the clients’ journey, not a day-by-day record. It includes an overnight stay at Ca’ Prandini as suggested in the video, plus a night near Lake Como. Allow extra time around booked visits and adapt the driving days to road conditions.
| Day | Drive and experience | Overnight stay |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nänikon / Zurich → Davos → Flüela Pass → Zernez → Fuorn / Ofen Pass → Val Müstair → Merano. Make the Alpine approach a full day, with breaks. | Merano |
| 2 | Merano → Maranello. Arrive with time for the Ferrari Museum if your booking allows, then enjoy an evening in town. | Ca’ Prandini, Maranello |
| 3 | Time for a separately arranged Ferrari visit, depending on access and booking, then continue towards Lake Como. Move visits between days 2 and 3 as needed. | Lake Como area |
| 4 | Lake Como → Bellinzona → San Bernardino Pass → Thusis → Nänikon / Zurich. Keep the return flexible and check pass conditions. | Return near Zurich |
Why drive to Maranello in a Ferrari 458?
There is something unusually satisfying about reaching Maranello in a Ferrari. The badge on the steering wheel suddenly belongs to the place outside the windscreen. After spending time with the car on the road, a museum visit feels connected to an experience you are already living.
The 458 Italia makes that connection particularly vivid. Its naturally aspirated 4.5 litre V8, low driving position and immediate responses turn even ordinary stretches into part of the occasion. A longer rental gives you time to appreciate the quieter side too: an unhurried departure, a scenic stop and an evening with the car parked outside. Our Ferrari 458 vs 488 comparison explores the character that makes this model so appealing.
Rent a Ferrari for Italy, with pickup near Zurich
If you are looking to rent a Ferrari for a trip to Maranello, Luxury Obsession offers a starting point in Nänikon, near Zurich. You collect the Ferrari 458 Italia in Switzerland and travel to Italy with prior written approval. This is a rental for your wider journey, with collection and return arranged with us near Zurich.
Weekday Privilege is a natural starting point for a trip during the working week. Italy driving and additional kilometres are agreed separately, just as they were for this client. Check the current rental packages and prices, then tell us your dates and the distance you have in mind. A scenic journey to Maranello can require more kilometres than the standard allowance, especially once local drives and the return journey are included.
Davos, Flüela and Fuorn: the scenic road to Merano
The clients approached Italy through Davos and Val Müstair, making the mountains part of the experience rather than simply a crossing to get out of the way. For a route like this, the Flüela Pass and the Fuorn Pass, also known as the Ofenpass, give the journey two distinct Alpine moods.
Flüela Pass: open mountain scenery
From Davos, the Flüela route climbs into a rocky, open landscape before descending towards the Engadine. It is a road to enjoy with time in hand: the changing views and the Ferrari’s precise responses are more memorable when there is no rush to reach the next stop.

Fuorn / Ofen Pass: forests and the approach to Val Müstair
From Zernez, the route towards the Fuorn Pass changes the scenery again. Forested stretches give way to the valley approach, with Val Müstair opening the way towards South Tyrol and Merano. It is a rewarding basis for this journey without adding the Stelvio’s tight sequence of hairpins.

A night in Merano before Maranello
The clients spent a night in Merano before continuing to Maranello. That pause makes sense: after a full Alpine day, an evening walk and a good night’s sleep let the next stage begin at a different pace. For a trip entirely within Switzerland, our Ferrari journey around Andermatt offers another way to combine mountain roads and overnight stays.
The Stelvio Pass: an optional detour, not a shortcut
The Stelvio is an optional detour for drivers who particularly want its dramatic hairpins. It was not part of this client journey. For this trip, we favour the approach via Fuorn and Val Müstair when the priority is a more relaxed drive rather than adding another demanding pass.
The Stelvio’s tight bends and exposure leave less room for error, particularly with traffic or poor visibility. No mountain route is automatically safe: check the weather, seasonal opening and road conditions for every pass, including Flüela and Fuorn. If conditions deteriorate, choose a suitable lower-altitude route instead.

The Ferrari Museum and factory visits in Maranello
Maranello is the emotional centre of the journey. At the Ferrari Museum, the road cars and racing story give context to the badge you have been looking at throughout the drive. Leave time to enjoy the visit rather than squeezing it between two long driving days.
When planning a Ferrari factory tour, distinguish between museum admission, any available panoramic bus tour and access inside production facilities. These are different experiences with separate booking and access conditions. Renting a Ferrari does not provide owner privileges or guarantee a factory visit. Confirm the experience available for your dates directly through the official Ferrari Museums website. Museum tickets and tours are arranged separately from the car rental.
Watch: taking a Ferrari 458 back to Maranello
In We did a FERRARI Factory Tour! IS IT WORTH IT?, the creators bring their own Ferrari 458 to Maranello and consider the appeal of a factory visit as part of the trip. The experience extends beyond the visit itself to a drive in the surrounding hills at sunset.
One practical recommendation is Ca’ Prandini in Maranello as a convenient base. Its official website presents a restored country house with a garden and rooms inspired by historic Formula 1 circuits. Staying in Maranello gives the visit more breathing room, which is why we include it as a suggested overnight stop above. Confirm availability and suitable parking directly with the property.
Watch the video for the atmosphere of arriving in your own Ferrari and for ideas to plan the visit. Access shown in an owner’s video does not automatically apply to a rental: confirm museum tickets and the exact tour separately.
Lake Como: time to slow the journey down
After Maranello, the clients stopped in the Lake Como area before returning to Switzerland. The lake brings a welcome contrast to the mountains and the excitement of Ferrari’s hometown: water, a stroll along the shore and time to let the journey settle.
Our suggested agenda includes one night here so the return does not become an extension of an already long day. Choose accommodation with suitable parking, check access for the Ferrari and leave enough mileage for local driving as well as the journey home.

Returning via San Bernardino instead of the Gotthard
On the way home, the clients chose the San Bernardino Pass to avoid traffic on the Gotthard route. From the Lake Como area, a return via Bellinzona and San Bernardino can give the final leg another Alpine character before continuing towards Thusis and Zurich.
This was a choice for their travel day, not a guarantee that San Bernardino is always quicker or quieter. Check live traffic and pass opening before deciding. When following the suggested map, make sure the route uses the pass road if that is your intention: the San Bernardino tunnel is a different option.

Their one change for next time: take a whole week
The clients already had other holiday plans for the weekend, which is why Weekday Privilege suited their schedule. Afterwards, they told us that if they could plan the journey again, they would take a whole week to enjoy it more.
That is perhaps the most useful lesson from the trip. A full week means less pressure to move on: another evening in Maranello, more time around the lake or a spare day to adapt to Alpine weather. Both Weekday Privilege and our Full Week package can be starting points for the rental, with Italy authorisation and the right mileage agreed separately.
Build the journey around time, kilometres and the right stops
Start with the total trip, not just the direct distance to Maranello. Include collection and return near Zurich, scenic alternatives and local driving. Then agree Italy authorisation and the mileage allowance before departure. Leave generous time between a mountain drive and any timed museum booking.
Tell us whether your priority is Alpine scenery, Maranello or a more relaxed stay in Italy. We can discuss the rental duration and mileage that suit your idea. Explore Ferrari rental in Zurich and send us your preferred dates to begin planning your own version of the experience.
Suggested route on Google Maps
The distances and times for each stage are indicative planning references, with driving times excluding stops. Traffic, weather and the route actually taken may change them. Google Maps may recalculate the route: check the waypoints and pass openings before departure.
Approx. 270 km · 4 h 30 min driving
The most scenic stage: from Davos over the Flüela and Fuorn passes, through Val Müstair and on to Merano. Leave time for breaks and the views so that the Alpine crossing becomes a highlight of the journey.
Approx. 280 km · 3 h driving
A largely motorway journey, with Alpine scenery through Trentino and the descent towards the Verona area before continuing to Maranello. The pace changes from the mountain passes of the previous day.
Approx. 240 km · 2 h 30 min driving
The least dramatic stage in terms of scenery, mostly on motorways. Watch for traffic as you pass near Milan and allow some extra time to reach the lake without rushing.
Approx. 280 km · 3 h 30 min driving
A scenic way to finish the journey, taking in San Bernardino and the Swiss Alpine landscape before returning to Nänikon. In summer, traffic often brings the drive closer to 4 hours; allow additional time for any stops.
